Jane Austen's Persuasion & Northanger Abbey, Antique Edition

An antique edition of Persuasion and Northanger Abbey from the late 19th century. Rebound together in beautiful green leather with gilt decoration on the backstrip. The books were from an antique set of Jane Austen novels edited by Reginald Brimley Johnson. Size: 7 x 4.75".

Northanger Abbey. This was the 6th Edition from the publisher, copyright March 1897. J M Dent and Company, London. There is moderate foxing on the title page and heavy foxing on the black and white frontispiece illustration. There are light soil fingerprints in the margin on page 1 of the Preface. The book has three illustrations including the frontispiece. There is not foxing on the other two illustrations. The first chapter header has a decorative black and white border. The pages are crisp with moderate tanning throughout. The very outer edge of the pages from the outside appear heavily tanned. The outer edge of the pages are deckled. There is an occasional small light foxing spot in the margin on pages 153, 211. Pages: 245.

Persuasion. This was the sixth edition from the publisher, November 1896. The title page and frontispiece are good. The Preface has a decorative header with a small illustrated female and floral decoration. There are three black and white illustrations including the frontispiece. The first Chapter header is decorated with two females talking in a garden setting. There is very small and light foxing in the margin on pages 21, 23, 91, 92, 233, 235-237. There is foxing and two small moisture spots on the last illustration. There is a very light small vertical pen mark in the lower right page corner of page 145 (~0.5 inch). There is a small horizontal tear in the margin of page 210 near the center (~0.25 inch). The pages are crisp with moderate tanning throughout. There is heavier tanning on the last two pages.
